YOUR WORDS IN THEIR MOUTHS
IN PERSON, IN CENTRAL LONDON
A one day, practical workshop on writing dialogue for the screen. Even the most fantastic stories bursting with colourful characters can be let down badly if the lines in the script don't work. Problems often seen include "on-the-nose" dialogue and exposition, lines that sound stilted, formal or unreal, characters who all speak with the same voice (often the writer's!) and perhaps the most common of all - over-writing. We'll be drilling down into what makes for great dialogue in film & TV. You'll learn how to find your characters' voices and write distinctive, naturalistic lines for them that fly off the page and really bring each one of them to life. We'll look at the recommended dos and don'ts and explore how to develop “a good ear for dialogue”, taking inspiration from both real life and the screen. We’ll practise creative techniques that will help you elevate your dialogue-writing skills to the next level and make your scripts not just a pleasure to read but also to perform! It’ll be a fun, informative and dynamic day with practical exercises throughout. Each participant will have a chance to hear their own dialogue read aloud in a group table-read towards the end of the day. (Screenwriting is "acting for shy people", after all!) Who is this workshop for? Aspiring and emerging screenwriters, script editors & producers. Actors who write are also welcome, of course! (NOTE: anyone who does not feel comfortable taking part in the table read will be excused.) Number of places: Maximum 20 (Please book early - these workshops can fill up quickly.) |
