SCRIPTWRITING SUMMER SCHOOL IN BRIGHTON 2024

create your own
tv drama series

A PRACTICAL WEEKEND WORKSHOP WITH ANJI LOMAN FIELD

For writers of any level who want to develop an original project.

STUCK AT THE STARTERS’ BLOCK?
If you have a fabulous, original idea for a TV drama series but haven’t quite managed to write any of it yet, you probably need a more structured approach.

It can be overwhelming - staring at a blank screen, working in isolation, not knowing quite how or where to start. There's a huge urge to just type: EXT. CORN FIELD. DAY and jump straight into writing the script.

STOP. RIGHT. THERE.

Unless you're a natural screenwriting genius (not impossible, probably unlikely) the odds are that you’ll end up with a lot of scenes you don't really need, featuring unclear characters who deliver way too many unnecessary lines in a confusing storyline.

It's all in the planning.

Experienced writers know this. They also know that, far from being just dull prep work, the planning process is where all the really exciting stuff happens. It’s the absolute foundation of the craft of screenwriting, behind every TV drama series you've ever loved.

The good news is, it's not rocket science. And once you've learnt the ropes, you will be able to adapt the "rules" to suit your own way of working, writing episodes that give your project the best possible chance of being commissioned.

HOW TO GET MOVING:
This workshop offers a rare opportunity to get expert guidance, feedback and support on your project from a professional writer/show-runner. You will also learn to evaluate the work of others, a vital skill to master if you're going to learn to be objective about your own work. (Which professional writers all need to be!)

WHAT’S INVOLVED?
This intensive two-day workshop will help you develop your idea from initial concept through to a clear Master Plan from which to work.

You'll get (and be giving) feedback at every stage.

We will explore vital questions including: what genre is your story?  Who will it interest? How many episodes will it take to tell it? What characters do you need/how many? Where should you start and end your script? What would be an appropriate style and tone for your writing?

You’ll learn how to explore and troubleshoot your ideas, hone your analytical skills, unleash your creativity and make sound editorial decisions.

You will finally be able to see the wood for the trees, feeling more equipped to move forward with your project and making procrastination a thing of the past.

There will be practical work along the way and between sessions, as you explore and develop your:

  • Concept
  • Format
  • Genre
  • Theme/s
  • Characters
  • Series & Episode Storylines
  • Cliffhangers
  • Market

COURSE STRUCTURE
The course takes place over one weekend in August. Please allocate an hour or two for project development, in-between the two sessions.

Some preparation work will be required!
You'll be asked to submit a 1-2 page TV drama series idea no later than 3 days before the start of the workshop. All participants will be sent a detailed Information Pack in advance, with guidance on what's required.

"Excellent teacher. Fun. Very clear and real information about how a story is developed from a pitch to production, as well as how it's woven into longer show storylines. We had such fun working on storylines together. It was superb. I would go every Sunday."  Mera Kalam - Aspiring Screenwriter
