SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
Script Development Workshops are hosted online by Theresa Boden via virtual platform on selected Mondays from 6.15pm - 9.15pm & from 1.15 - 4.15pm and occasionally at BECTU London HQ (Victoria SW1) in-person on selected Mondays from 1.15-4.15pm. The drop-in feedback workshops are for a maximum of 6 writers ( writing teams may attend as one participant) so booking is advised at least a week before the workshop. You don't have to come every month just as and when you want to.
The 3 hour drop-in workshops allow you to develop your script from initial idea to final draft, to help make your work the best it can possibly be - whether feature-film, short film, web series ,TV sitcom or drama series.
Script development is the least appreciated but probably the most important element in the industry - if the script doesn't work the finished product likely won't. Feedback is a vital part of the development process for writers and how to receive and use it is an important skill to learn in navigating development with commissioning editors, agents, directors and producers.
Whatever stage you’re at- premise, synopsis, treatment or outline to a draft of a script - bring your work along and receive constructive criticism to help you develop it further. You’ll improve your writing, story assessment and editing skills by giving feedback to other writers with a professional script consultant leading the workshop. This is a verbal workshop - written feedback is not required - so please take notes during feedback of what resonates. The workshops are monthly daytime and evening drop-ins and you don't need to commit to more than one - just come when you want to.
It works like this: one tutor/script consultant to up to six writers.
The tutor emails workshop details, submission instructions & deadline one week before the workshop.
You need to be able to submit your work to be circulated to the other writers and tutor by the Thursday or Friday deadline before the Monday workshop.
You may circulate:
- up to 10pp of a treatment or outline or synopsis typed in minimum 11pt font single line spacing OR
- up to 30pp of your screenplay (if it isn’t the first 30pp please submit a brief summary, no longer than one page)
- plus a list of questions you would like the group to think about when considering feedback (optional).
You will receive feedback from the other writers and tutor; and together we’ll create a development plan for you, agree how frequently you want to attend, and give you attainable goals for each step and deadlines to help focus your work.

TESTIMONIALS
'I started Theresa's monthly workshops a year ago with zero scriptwriting experience, as a photographer and filmmaker. Like many people I suffer a lot from imposter syndrome, but the workshops have been so encouraging and really given me the confidence and constructive criticism in order to propel myself from writing a 5 minute film to an entire feature script in just one year. Having the deadline of a workshop each month provides great accountability, helping the projects to progress sooner. It's also a great way to get into the writing community meeting other writers in the workshop.'
Jasmine de Silva, writer/director
'I really enjoyed these sessions. Theresa is incredibly knowledgeable and I loved the experience of workshopping in a friendly, supportive environment. I learnt a lot about screenwriting, both the craft side and the important formatting issues.'
Katie Whitehead, writer
'Theresa's development workshops are my secret weapon! Her feedback is always crystal clear, generous, and motivating, and the workshops are fantastically run ( and a lot of fun).'
Jehan Bokhari, writer
'One of the few zoom meetings I look forward to is Theresa's workshop: a group of screenwriters that treat each other with respect and value the work of the others. Theresa manages the workshop charismatically and clearly. She always gives helpful feedback, and her ideas help me progress in my writing.'
Ingrid Kaltenegger, screenwriter - Cologne, Germany
'Each time I have gone, I have found new insights and helpful comments that have stimulated my creativity and given me fresh impetus. It is crucial to have feedback from other writers if you are to succeed as a writer.'
Stephen Curran, screenwriter
'An excellent way to keep you focused and moving forward with your writing. I know of no other workshop where you can get such useful, practical help with your script.'
Catriona Craig, writer/director
'Great tools and strategies for taking a project further. It's like having a great mentor from initial idea to finished script. Brilliant!'
