WRITE THE CONTAINED FEATURE FILM

What do BURIED, LOCKE, OXYGEN, THE GUILTY and SEARCHING have in common?

They're all contained movies, meaning movies with a limited cast and few locations that were or could have been produced on a low-budget.

Producers and directors seek out contained scripts.

Why?  Because  they're much easier to finance and produce -- as such there is less financial risk involved and more potential for the film to make a profit. Therefore, a strong, character-driven, contained screenplay can be an attractive proposition for producers.

But how do you take your ideas and characters and write a screenplay for a contained film which could more easily attract interest from the industry?

How do you make the most out of the limitations and restrictions you've given yourself?

How do you expand the scope of your story while keeping it contained?

This interactive course will help you build solid foundations for a contained film script that stands a strong chance of getting produced and seen by an audience.

COURSE CONTENT

In Session One, you will:
  • Review and discuss examples of contained films and screenplays.
  • Learn how to identify great source material and/or come up with ideas and concepts for a contained film.
  • Create a strategy for yourself. What's your brand? What's your genre?
  • Develop a keen understanding of aspects to keep in mind and what to avoid when writing a contained script.
  • Turn your idea into a clear logline.

In Session Two, you will:
  • Receive professional feedback on your idea and logline. Share feedback as a group.
  • Understand how to write a character-driven script, which is more important when flashy VFX or action sequences are not an option.
  • Explore what your story is really about (the theme)
  • Learn how to develop your idea into an effective one-page outline and create character bios.

In Session Three, you will:
  • Receive professional feedback on your one-page outline and character bios. Workshop your project with the other students.
  • Deepen your understanding of Plot & Structure.
  • Firm up the arc of your protagonist.
  • Explore ways of seeking and integrating feedback.

In Session Four, you will:
  • Receive professional feedback on your revised two-page outline. Workshop your project with the other students.
  • Learn how to heighten the key plot points of your story.
  • Develop your pitch.
  • Map out the development process of your script.

The goal behind taking this course is to prepare you so that you are ready to write and develop your contained script and increase your chances of having a movie made.
