"LIKE GREAT ARCHITECTURE,
GREAT SCRIPTS NEED TO BE DESIGNED"
THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF TV DRAMA
A ONE DAY EUROSCRIPT WORKSHOP
Raise your screenwriting game - and give TV drama development executives something to feel warm and fuzzy about with your next script.....
WORKSHOP CONTENT Most people who watch drama on television are unaware of the multiple messages their senses are receiving; the layers of storytelling that are unfolding before their eyes (and ears). They take it all in, almost subconsciously, just enjoying the story. But in order to write good TV drama, we need to take our viewing skills to a whole new level. We must learn to separate the flesh from the bones – and to get right inside the head of the writer. In this one day workshop, a forensic analysis of an episode of a popular TV drama series will explore how it was put together, identifying the decisions the writer made along the way - about character, the story world and setting as well as the story structure and turning points. What do we learn about characters - not just from their words and interactions but from the way they move, the decor in their house, the clothes they wear, the music they listen to, the secrets they keep? How will they change, once the story kicks in? What's their emotional journey? What will their dilemma be by the end of episode one? By deconstructing an episode, participants will gain a clear understanding of the techniques used in developing a compelling opening episode of a drama series. If it's going to end with a gripping cliffhanger, how should it start? What journey will the characters be on and how can you play with the viewers' expectations to keep them engaged? This is an entertaining, interactive workshop, with creative challenges and practical exercises throughout the day. You'll get feedback on your individual work and there'll be time for Q&A with your tutor before the session ends. HOW COULD IT HELP YOUR SCREENWRITING CAREER? Development executives are the gatekeepers of television drama. They read a huge number of scripts, which they really do WANT to like. Their hope - with each new title - is that they're about to strike gold; that This One will tick all the boxes and pave the way to their first whiff of a BAFTA nomination. Those dreams are often shattered by page 5. Because - even when you have a great concept, and a fantastic pitch - if the script itself doesn't match up, everything else will fall apart. This workshop provides insights to help you overcome the common pitfalls to write a script that makes the reader's heart sing - rather than sink! WHO’S IT FOR? This workshop is designed for anyone interested in screenwriting for television, script-editing or developing scripted drama for TV. |
