"Everyone in film needs to know how to read a script"

Scripts are the blueprints for all filmmaking - and they're not just the business of writers and actors.

Becoming a good script reader is a vital step towards a development career.

And it’s crucial for writers to know how readers assess their work.

This practical course covers all aspects of script assessment, showing you how to write reports for writers, producers, funding bodies and financiers.

Course Structure

• The five-week, small-group structure allows students to learn from each other and receive full feedback from the tutor
• We’ll be working with “live” projects.
• You’ll meet the producers and writers developing them, and get their feedback on your report.

In the course, we'll:

• Analyse the basic elements of scripts - genre, characterisation, structure, narrative, dialogue
• See how assessing long-form TV ideas differs from feature scripts

• Explore differences in reporting for writers, producers, film funds
• Investigate the opportunities currently open to script readers
• Find out about the relationship between scripts and novels, and how producers

At the end of the course you’ll be confident to answer questions about a script, like:

• What are its artistic merits?
• What creative scope does it offer a director, actors, designers, etc?
• Is it likely to be a financial success?
• What is its budget likely to be?
• Is it likely to justify a large investment of time, money and creativity by numerous people?
• Can it be improved – and if so, how?

And you'll find New Colleagues

• You'll become part of a ready-made network of aspiring script developers.
• Past groups still keep in touch and share info about work opportunities.
