WANT TO WRITE A TV DRAMA PILOT?

The more prepared you are, the more likely you are to be able to nail your story, genre and format.

This 4-step workshop is suitable for emerging television screenwriters of all levels, from first timers to those planning to move across from novel-writing or theatre.

You will receive professional guidance on writing a TV drama pilot,  progressing from initial idea through series treatment,  to producing a blueprint Step Outline from which to write a first draft script.

CONTENT

The workshop involves the following four-steps:
INTRODUCTION

  • Designing a TV drama series - considering everything from style, tone and genre to format and length. We will also look at pitch documents. Who are they for? What are they meant to do?

THE PITCH

  • Share a one or two-line pitch for your own idea. Receive professional and peer-group feedback and advice that will help you develop your concept and characters. You will also learn a lot from evaluating other people's ideas.

THE TREATMENT

  • Explore the point of writing a treatment and how best to make it work - both for you and for the industry. Learn how to develop your ideas and create characters with a clear function in your story; learn about story beats and how to keep viewers engaged.

THE STEP OUTLINE

  • We look at writing the step outline (AKA a Scene Breakdown or Scene x Scene document) detailing each scene for a TV drama. This document should become the blueprint from which to write your script.
  • Learn how to troubleshoot story or character issues and fix problems before sending your work out into the world.

By following these tips, you should be able to plan the first draft of your script, with clear characters, story and structure all in place.

Note - please bring a typed one-two line pitch for a TV series idea with you to the workshop.
