THE SITCOM WEEKEND

A successful sitcom is the holy grail for broadcasters. In this intensive weekend you'll develop your own sitcom while you master the machinery of this very distinctive genre to create classic characters, settings and plots.

You can use the carefully constructed exercise on the course to work on ideas you bring with you, or to help you develop completely new material from scratch.

You'll leave the weekend with a portfolio of original, enduring characters; ideas for episodes and further series, and a bullet point first draft of your own sitcom.    
On Day One you'll:

  • Learn about what makes a great sitcom character
  • Watch and analyze examples of classic characters
  • Begin to create and develop your own classic characters
  • Develop settings to bring out their full potential
  • Create counter-characters to make their lives a misery
  • Come up with B characters to see how the subplot works



On Day Two you'll: 

  • Practice and polish gag techniques
  • Build up dialogue writing skills
  • Watch, analyze and practice scene structure
  • Analyze and develop story structure
  • Develop and practice a pitch for your sitcom
  • Create the beat-by-beat outline for your pilot episode
  • Begin writing your sitcom
