In many ways, Noir is more a dark, subversive way of seeing the world than a separate genre.
Audiences for such films as Winter’s Bone (above), Blue Velvet or Memento may not even know that they’re watching a Neo Noir. But they respond to the extra levels of anxiety, threat and emotion in the films. Neo Noir is a treasure-trove of characters, narrative strategies, settings and ideas which can elevate 'thrillers' into something much more haunting and memorable. Twisting and updating the themes and formats of classic Film Noir, it often gives us unlikely protagonists. Not trench-coated detectives, but young women caring for vulnerable families, naive teenage boys, and brain-damaged men. As in the films mentioned above. This workshop will unpack the genre to find the ideas that make it tick, and how they can be used to create strong, contemporary stories with British settings and a range of protagonists. You can explore the genre in depth at our workshop on August 31. We'll look at how the genre addresses sexuality, gender, and other political, social and psychological themes. You can read more about Noir in my blog piece here. Here's a BLOG PIECE outlining why Neo Noir is so pertinent to the times we live in. COURSE CONTENT: We'll watch entertaining and inspiring clips which illustrate each important element of the genre. Explanation and discussion will enable you to understand these topics in detail. We'll look at how the genre addresses sexuality, gender, and other political, social and psychological themes. Fun and interesting exercises will help you to create the elements of your own Neo Noir story. NEO NOIR FACEBOOK GROUP You'll be meeting some like-minded people on the workshop, and it seems artificial to limit the interactions to a single day. So we'll be creating a special Facebook group for attendees where we can share links, documents and images before and afterwards - and maybe find people to collaborate with on projects. |
