A ONE-DAY PRACTICAL WORKSHOP
ON WRITING COMPELLING SCENES FOR FILM & TV
Monday JUNE 12 - CENTRAL LONDON
On the face of it, writing a scene should be easy. You start with a heading:
EXT. REMOTE COUNTRYSIDE. DAY
...and just fill in the space below with scintillating SCENE DIRECTIONS and DIALOGUE.
But screenwriting is a famously taut medium. Every single word counts, and must earn its place on the page.
Each scene has to work not just for your story and characters but for those who may some day bring your script to life, from script editors, producers, financiers and commissioners to directors, performers and everyone involved in production.
Your script is their BLUEPRINT.
So what needs to be on the page and what can you afford to leave out? Where do you start and end each scene? And is that tricky scene you’ve been agonising over even necessary in the first place?
How can you grip your readers with a real page-turner of a script that has a good chance of selling?
In this one-day workshop we’ll analyse iconic TV & movie scenes, both on screen and on the page, and there'll be practical exercises in which you'll explore:
Scene construction
Scene function
Planting intrigue & suspense
Creating twists
Visual storytelling techniques
Different ways to reveal character
We'll also examine tone, pace, withholding information and how to create momentum that will drive your story and characters forward. You'll learn about common scene-writing pitfalls and how to avoid them, and how to write tight, believable dialogue that'll breathe life into your characters.
WHO’S IT FOR?
New and Developing Screenwriters.
