Stories don't always give up their secrets easily.

Sometimes a film (or novel) can really move us - but we can't see quite how.

Elements can be hidden at almost unconscious levels, poised to take effect later, contributing to unforgettable endings with maximum emotional impact.

The workshop uncovers these methods and unpacks the ways that stories use them to create a variety of powerful emotional effects.

It will stimulate your writing by giving you a range of new tools, strategies and approaches. 

Fully illustrated with entertaining clips, and including exercises and reading material, the workshop will help you to better understand:

• The narrative shape which will communicate the ideas and emotions you intend 
• How different story shapes and ways of using information change a narrative's emotional impact
• How to create an emotional journey which becomes richer as the story develops - and pays off in a truly satisfying way

​Drawing on cutting-edge techniques from recent TV series as well as forgotten methods from classic films and prose fiction, it will:

• Show how narratives can be designed to evoke suspense, identification, anticipation, surprise, shock, and powerful reversals of expectation.

• Give you the tools to ensure that your story is designed to maximise its emotional impact and deliver a satisfying experience for your audience.
• ​​Suggest how narrative design can help to define characterisation and visual and sound approaches, ensuring that they work together to support a story.

​The workshop includes a short story to be read before the day, and much supporting material to refer to afterwards.

ABOUT THE TUTOR

Ian Long is Euroscript's Head of Consultancy, and teaches a range of workshops including Writing Horror, Writing Neo Noir and Creating Fear in Films.

STARGAZER, a dark psychological thriller feature co-written by Ian and directed by Christian Neuman will be released early in 2025.

He is also developing a World Building workshop for writers of screenplays and prose fiction, and for game designers.
