ABOUT NEO NOIR
Neo Noir is uniquely suited to revealing the dark side of the modern world.
Twisting and extending the themes of classic Film Noir, it focuses on the dangerous, self-damaging aspects of human nature, and the flaws in our institutions and workplaces which enable them to prosper. This workshop isn’t aimed at finding ways to reproduce classic Noirs, but to analyse the elements which make them compelling, inspiring us to capture their essence in powerful, contemporary stories. Neo Noir is a treasure-trove of characters, narrative strategies, settings and ideas which can elevate stories into something truly haunting and memorable. Its often unlikely protagonists include young women caring for vulnerable siblings (Winter's Bone), naive teenagers (Blue Velvet) and damaged men (Memento). For all these reasons, the genre is a great vehicle for both social commentary and psychological insight. “It’s the ideas behind noir that interest me, not pastiche or homage. To successfully reinvent the genre, we need to connect with the darkness of our own time and place." - Steven Soderbergh WORKSHOP CONTENT
The workshop will unpack the genre to find the ideas that make it tick, and show how they can be used to create strong, contemporary stories.
We'll watch entertaining and inspiring clips which illustrate each important element of the genre. Explanation and discussion will enable you to understand these topics in detail. We'll look at how the genre addresses sexuality, gender, and other political, social and psychological themes. Enjoyable and challenging exercises will help you to create the elements of your own Neo Noir story. NEO NOIR FACEBOOK GROUP
After the workshop, I'll create a special Facebook group where we can all share thoughts, links, documents and images relating to the day and the ideas we explore.
