WRITING FEAR

Picture

How does fear operate in stories?
What does it do for audiences?
How can we best deliver it?
Fear is a fundamental emotion ...

... if not, at first glance, a positive one.

Many memorable story involve scary moods, frightening characters, and shocking moments.

But why do people often talk about them with relish - almost affection?

Do we need to be disturbed, unsettled, or terrified by stories?

If so, why? And what is fear, exactly?

This workshop explores fear not just as a tool for shock or suspense, but as something with deeper psychological and creative value.

Over the two days, we'll ...

Analyse the concept of fear.

Detail its various types.

Explore the deep psychology behind the things that scare us.

Give you tools to create frightening characters and disturbing atmospheres.

Answer the basic question - why do we want to be scared?

Does fear have positive effects? And if so - what are they?
Mixing Theory and Practice

While supplying inspiring ideas, the workshop will also get you writing.

Carefully-chosen, entertaining film clips
will illustrate the concepts.

Group discussion will enable us to share ideas.

Stimulating exercises will help you master the ideas and apply them to your own work.

Cross-genre application

The workshop's not just about horror. It applies to all genres which must deliver fear convincingly - thrillers, crime, SF, war films, survival stories.
After the day: the 'Alumni Group'

The workshop won’t end when the sessions finish.

Participants will be invited to a private 'alumni group' - a space where ideas can continue to unfold and new directions can be explored over time.

It will be a place to test ideas, share fragments, and stay in contact with others working in similar territory.

Clips, documents and references can be shared there. You can bring questions to the group and tell them about developing projects.

Choose how much you want to be involved - drop in and out at will.
