WRITING CRIME DRAMA FOR TELEVISION

Picture
AN ONLINE, ONE-DAY WORKSHOP

COURSE OVERVIEW

Crime drama remains one of television’s most dynamic and enduring genres.

Explore how to craft compelling crime stories for the screen—stories that go beyond plot mechanics to reveal the emotional, psychological, and moral complexity of characters caught in high-stakes situations.

Participants will examine how point-of-view shapes audience empathy, how unreliable narrators and criminal protagonists can deepen mystery, and how legal and ethical constraints can become creative opportunities.

Whether you're developing a spec script, pitching a new series, or refining your storytelling instincts, this workshop offers practical tools and dramaturgical insights that will elevate your work.

TOPICS
  • Writing from the criminal’s POV: empathy, ambiguity, and dramatic irony
  • Unreliable narration and narrative misdirection
  • Emotional realism and psychological depth in crime storytelling
  • Composite character design and mythic reframing
  • Episodic structure and character arcs in TV formats
  • Legal risk and copyright-safe adaptation strategies

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN
  • A toolkit for developing layered, morally complex characters
  • Techniques for building suspense and withholding information
  • Genre-savvy strategies for subverting expectations
  • Practical writing exercises and scene-building prompts
  • Downloadable handouts and optional feedback on your work
