TRUE STORIES INCUBATOR

TELLING TRUE STORIES - RECAP
It is estimated that perhaps half of films and television currently made is based on true stories and real lives. Good reason, then, that these projects are perennially popular with writers and producers. Finding, researching, developing, writing and making true stories and real lives into viable films or television series that work dramatically is often trickier than expected. Successful projects, while technically solid, usually bring something extra to the underlying material. The Telling True Stories for the Screen workshop, which precedes the True Story Incubator, helps creatives plan how to approach the process, navigate the pitfalls and shape their own ideas for individual projects. TRUE STORIES INCUBATOR - RATIONALE Participants come away from the Telling True Stories for the Screen workshop with an understanding of how they can move their narrative to another level while staying true to its origins. Working in a smaller group, they now commit to regular sessions to develop their material into a project they feel ready to share with agents, producers or talent. True Story Incubator will run monthly on selected Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings. Each session, for four to six participants, lasts two and a quarter hours, from 19:00 to 21:15. The number of projects discussed may vary from session to session, depending on who attends and what they need. Each session will be tailored to the work submitted, but cover such things as: research; legal and ethical issues; navigating between true story and compelling drama. Eight calendar days before each session (Monday for a Monday session, Tuesday for a Tuesday session, Wednesday for a Wednesday session) participants share material with their True Story Incubator group. There is no set formula for what to submit. It could be: challenges specific to their true story; a logline, synopsis, outline or treatment; TV series bible; character thumbnails; up to 20 pages of draft screenplay. Everyone in a True Story Incubator group commits to prepping all material submitted before each session. This is not altruism. Participants gain insight into their own work from thinking about how best other people can develop theirs. This collaborative approach forges a strong group ethos and individuals benefit from working with people who understand the specific challenges of Telling True Stories for the Screen.
