WRITING SCIENCE FICTION
A three-PART Online WorkshoP

Picture
But how do you start to write a Science Fiction story?

And – maybe even more daunting - how do you formulate an entire world for your Science Fiction story?

One that not only hangs together logically, but also supports the story you want to tell?

The answer to is to base it on a single, strong “what if?” question, like:

  • “What if hyper-intelligent apes conquered the Earth and began to rule over humans?"

  • “What if human beings can no longer reproduce?”

  • “What if we were invaded by hostile, blind aliens which attack anything that makes a sound?”

Beginning like this gives you the jigsaw puzzle pieces to build a full, coherent and plausible world.

It also means that no matter how wild or inventive your story becomes, it will always have a comprehensible core.

Like a scientific experiment, the world of your story will become a crucible or testing ground for your idea.

This will make it interesting to write, and intriguing for audiences and readers.

The workshop will show you how to work through it and find its implications for the world it calls into being. – people, ways of life, other life-forms and technology.

HIGH CONCEPT AND ELEVATOR PITCH

The “what if” is not unlike a “high concept” or “elevator pitch” – a succinct phrase which makes people eager to hear – or read – more.
This is important because:

(1) The writing process is more straightforward; you always have something to refer back to.

If you get lost, you can easily check if you’re staying with your basic theme.

(2) Starting from this point makes it much easier to articulate your story to other people.
