OVERVIEW Romance Stories are as old as story telling itself. Although the meaning of the word Romance has changed over time, nowadays we understand a Romance Story as a tale of longing to love and be loved. At the basis of all modern Romance Stories is a lack, a feeling that life has more to offer. The protagonists - usually two - have a feeling about this lack that they do not fully understand. They identify someone that they think will make their life whole. This someone becomes their object of desire. Of course, if it were that simple, there would be no story to tell. The protagonists are now faced with obstacles to overcome and this process tests them. Only then is each one whole in their own right and ready for love. What these hurdles are, how, and indeed if, the protagonists overcome them, is what makes Romance Stories both universal and individual. Writers determine the outcome of their Romance Story by choosing the tone of their story (comedy, drama or tragedy). And they can mix in extra genre elements for make a RomCom or a Romantasy. Writers of Romance, Romcom and Romantasy need to know how the story type works, what the genre expectations are and how to meet, modify or re-invent these stories in a way that elevates their project and resonates with audiences. When writers get it right, the result can be a classic. But these remain few and far between. The reason? Writing Romance, RomCom and Romantasy is not easy and getting it just right is really difficult. So if you have a project that could do with a little help starting, developing or getting over the line, this is the workshop for you WORKSHOP CONTENT Part One - focusses on understanding the fundamentals of all Romances, including Romcom and Romantasy. It looks at how to use structural elements including theme, tone and genre to shape and elevate the story you want to tell. Part Two - is a specialist workshop. Participants submit their own projects for feedback from the group and the tutor. Note: by booking Part Two participants agree to respect confidentiality with regard to other people's projects.
