PRACTICE THE SKILLS YOU NEED TO CREATE CLASSIC COMEDY CHARACTERS AND SURE-FIRE HILARIOUS PLOTS IN TWO ONLINE WORKSHOP MODULES WITH COMEDY WRITER AND PRODUCER

Join either or both modules. Each is two-and-a-half hours.

The workshops use practical exercises and insights to help you exercise and develop your comedy writing muscles.

Whether you want to write for page, stage, television, film, audio or other platforms, these user-friendly workshop modules are suitable for writers at any level of skill or experience.

Module One: Characters
What makes a classic comedy character? It's not the jokes that make the character funny; it's the character who makes the jokes funny. Learn how to create memorable funny characters.

Module Two: Plotting
Plotting a bank heist is easy. Plotting a comedy about a bank heist is hard. Learn the secrets of comedy story structure and the dynamics that make a compelling plot.

These modules offer a unique opportunity to get expert guidance from a highly experienced professional comedy writer and producer. In Paul's words: "I can't guarantee to make you funny, but I can teach you everything I've learned about making your work funny, and make you a better comedy writer.

  • The secrets behind classic comedy characters. What makes them funny? 
  • How to use status, conflict, and stereotypes.
  • How to develop a stereotype into a main character.
  • The difference between likability and empathy.
  • How to create key comedy relationships.
  • Simple exercises to test drive any character. 

MODULE TWO. 10am - 12.30pm.
Sunday 22nd June.

  • What makes a funny plot?
  • The difference between plot and story.
  • How characters drive plot.
  • Step-by-step: how to design structure.
  • What could possibly go wrong? Using escalation.
  • Timeless plot tropes, and how to refresh them. 
  • What makes a sitcom tick?
  • Know your genres: sitcom, comedy-drama, romcom, hybrid, crossover and more.

TUTOR
Paul Bassett Davies
is an experienced writer, producer and broadcaster. He began his career in experimental multimedia before creating solo shows that won comedy awards at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and were adapted for BBC radio. Paul has worked with some of the biggest names in British comedy. He co-wrote the BBC radio sitcom At Home with the Hardys with Jeremy Hardy, and produced the BBC series Do Go On, which he wrote with Graeme Garden and Griff Rhys Jones. He also scripted the children's feature animation, The Magic Roundabout. He's written four novels, and his story The Spots is one of Six Scary Stories Selected and Introduced by Stephen King. Paul was also the creative director of the London Comedy Writing Festival.
