DEVELOPING CHARACTERS FOR THE SCREEN
|
A ONE-DAY WORKSHOP IN CENTRAL LONDON.
Characters in a film or TV drama don’t exist in isolation, they have RELATIONSHIPS with other characters and a clear DRAMATIC FUNCTION in how the story unfolds. This one-day, practical workshop explores how to design memorable characters with maximum potential for adding interest, intrigue and emotional impact - all crucial elements that make for compelling stories. CONTENT
PART 1 - 11AM - 1PM We'll be looking at iconic film or TV characters and their on-screen relationships, exploring how they impact on each other and what each of them brings to the story. By deconstructing plot, we uncover the POINT of each character and explore the design considerations made by the writer during the project development process. You'll be troubleshooting alternatives, too - how placing a different character in a particular scenario would have impacted on both the overall story and the emotional journey of the central character. PART 2 - 2PM - 4PM Working to a unique story brief with a clear central character, you'll develop your own supporting characters to maximise the dramatic potential of the story and then share your creations with the group, receiving feedback and guidance on your ideas. PART 3 - 4PM - 6PM Having designed your own characters, you'll choose one of them to develop further and - to a clear brief - will write a monologue, finding your character's voice and bringing them to life. These monologues will then be shared with the group for feedback. The day will end with a 15 minute Q&A session. WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR? Any aspiring or emerging screenwriter who wants to develop their character development skills. BONUS BENEFITS As well as having fun while learning, you'll meet like-minded individuals. Students often stay in touch and form invaluable support groups. Your classmates could well become your "tribe". WHAT TO BRING Please bring paper, pens, a laptop and your imagination. |
