STUCK AT THE STARTERS’ BLOCK?
If you have a fabulous, original idea for a TV drama series but haven’t quite managed to write any of it yet, you may need a more structured approach.

It can be overwhelming - staring at a blank screen, working in isolation, not knowing quite how or where to start. There's a huge urge to just type: EXT. CORN FIELD. DAY and jump straight into writing the script. 

STOP. RIGHT. THERE.

Unless you're a natural screenwriting genius (not impossible, probably unlikely) the odds are that you’ll end up with a lot of scenes you don't really need, featuring unclear characters who deliver way too many unnecessary lines in a confusing and unfocused storyline. 

It's all in the planning. 

Experienced writers know this. They also know that, far from being just dull prep work, the planning process is where all the really exciting stuff happens. It’s the absolute foundation of the craft of screenwriting, behind every TV drama series you've ever loved (or loathed).

The good news is, it's not rocket science. And once you've learnt the ropes, you will be able to adapt the "rules" to suit your own way of working, giving your project the best possible chance of success.

HOW TO GET MOVING:
This workshop offers a rare opportunity to get expert insights on writing TV drama from a professional writer/show-runner. You will also be evaluating the work of others, a vital skill to master as it'll help you become more objective about your own work. (Which all professional writers need to be!)

  • Series & Episode Storylines
  • Cliffhangers
  • Market

FEEDBACK

​Pitch your own drama series idea - and receive feedback from both the tutor and other members of the group. We'll be exploring:

  • Genre
  • Theme
  • Style and tone
  • Who the show will interest (both audience and market-wise)
  • How to work out how many episodes you need to tell the story
  • The characters - who, how many?
  • The HOOK, the INCITING INCIDENT, the MAJOR STORY BEATS and the RESOLUTION

You’ll learn how to explore and troubleshoot your ideas, hone your analytical skills and unleash your creativity. 

STRATEGY - making a workable, step-by-step plan that will help you get your pilot script written.

Some preparation work is required!

You'll need to submit a 1 page pitch for your TV drama series in advance -  no later than 3 days before the start of the workshop. NOTE: all participants will be sent a detailed Information Pack in advance, with guidance on what's required.

TUTOR
Anji Loman Field is an established screenwriter, storyliner and script editor. She has worked in film, television and radio drama in multiple genres across three continents, most recently as lead writer on THE DEVIL'S PROMISE, a 6 x 50' episode English/Arabic supernatural thriller, created by Tony Jordan (Red Planet) for MBC and now streaming on Tubi/Apple TV.
