Learn how to give audiences the deep, dark experiences

We often talk as if audiences go to films mainly to ‘feel good’.
But that's not the whole story. Very often, audiences also want stories to disturb, disorient, confuse, worry and even terrify them. Horror is the obvious case, but people seek degrees of these experiences in thrillers, science fiction, crime stories, social dramas - even comedy. So writers need to find original ways to take their characters – and their audiences – out of their comfort zones. It's a crucial part of writing compelling stories. Feature films need escalating conflict. Protagonists must suffer, lose control, confront uncertainty and crisis to drive narratives forward. But audiences also want these experiences for their own purposes. |
The workshop gives you numerous ways to create these experiences.
Horror provides particularly strong examples, so we'll look at its psychological principles, and how they can apply, in more restrained ways, to other kinds of story. We'll find out WHY people want to be disturbed. How "negative experiences" can be absorbing, potentially productive and even pleasurable. You'll learn ways to take audiences to places they don't expect to go. Carefully-chosen film clips will illustrate the concepts. Discussions will let you share your thoughts and ideas with the group. Fun exercises will help you to master the ideas and begin to apply them to your own work. |
