ADAPT ABILITY – THE ART OF ADAPTATION

The best adaptations are not rewrites but reinventions.

Whether you adapt your own work or someone else's, in this workshop you can learn how to transform material from one medium to another, creating an original new work that is also faithful to the spirit of its source.

Successful adaptation requires you to stay in touch with the material's origins, but also to make it entirely your own - because if you're not doing your own best, inspired, original work, you're not doing your job.

The secret of adapting your own material is treat it as someone else's work. It's often harder to adapt your own material than another person's. For one thing, the original writer is always there, giving you a hard time.

But whatever the source of the material you're adapting, you can use the same key steps and techniques to produce a unique new work that evolves naturally from its predecessor and takes it a step further on its creative journey.
INCLUDED IN THE COURSE

  • Understanding what each medium does best – and what it doesn't.
  • Why you should take liberties to liberate the story.
  • The secret door - how to access the story a new way.
  • What a good adaptation can add to the original.
  • The most common errors of bad adaptations.
Please note, places are strictly limited: this is a workshop based on exercises, participation and personal feedback, not a lecture.
