Two Words You Must Never Use In Treatments

Charles Harris

Treatments can be tough - there's a whole new way of writing to learn. They work totally differently from screenplays.

You need to know that there's two words that you must avoid at all costs. Using these two words together almost guarantees to sabotage anything that's any good in your treatment and send it straight into the bin.

And these two words are...

... wait for it...

...and then...

Treatments have to flow. And the best way to slow the flow is ...and then...The one thing they absolutely must not do is list everything that takes place in the script. They are not a contract or a check list. They are there to give an impression of the movie or TV show - no more - to a potential buyer or to yourself, the writer, as part of the development process.

So, your job is to create the most flowing, readable, evocative prose that you can. Never, ever, go: X and then Y and then Z... It's the fastest recipe I know to send your reader to sleep. And your treatment into the void.

Use words that add flow and style. Words and phrases like meanwhile, moreover, on the other hand, to his surprise, to her excitement...
