Tuesday 21st June
Thriller and Film Noir
6.15pm to 9.30pm
Tutor: Ian Long
If you can immerse an audience in a story so deeply that it reacts both physically and psychologically to your tale's twists and turns, you've taken a huge step towards creating a successful film.
When you've thrilled the audience, you have its attention. And this means you can talk about many subjects: the Thriller is a broad genre which can encompass diverse themes - crime, politics, passion and individual psychology - and range from B features to big-budget action movies, taking in some of the greatest works of art in cinema.
But how do film-makers go about the business of creating thrills and suspense? Using clips from classic and contemporary films, we'll discuss how various kinds of Thriller achieve their effects, how the genre is changing - and show how the Noir genre continues to reassert itself in contemporary cinema.
We'll also help you tease out which genre or genres are at work in your own projects, and give advice and feedback on how to strengthen their effect and make them work to the advantage of the script.
