Tuesday 8th November
Science Fiction, Speculative Fiction and Twisted Realities

6.15pm to 9.30pm
Tutor: Ian Long

Science and Speculative Fiction stories are the prime vehicles for ideas in cinema. This includes stories that play with time, alternative worlds, or other versions of being human; stories that take aspects of the world we know and cleverly alter them, raising fascinating questions about life. Space-ships and lasers are optional; great ideas are a must.

Once you start thinking like this, you might be surprised by the films that come under the general heading. Movies like Groundhog Day, Big, Adaptation, Sliding Doors, Final Destination, Stalker, Donnie Darko and countless others are based on ideas from the Science Fiction canon. Wild satires, inventive rom-coms, dark psychological studies, redemptive comedies and brooding existentialist art can all be generated by broadly “sci-fi” ideas.

Watching clips from modern and classic movies in these genres, we'll uncover essential clues to how the genre has developed and changed in recent years and look at your own projects to help you develop intriguing and powerful stories.
