TORRIANO POETRY COMPETITION

With their pared-down language and concentration on vivid imagery, screenplays have often been compared to poetry. And if your interest in the form goes further, you'll want to enter the Torriano Poetry Competition. Offering prizes of £250, £150 and £75, all proceeds go to the Torriano Meeting House Support Fund, maintaining a unique spoken-word venue in London.

MEMORIES OF A CINEMA PROJECTIONIST

Here's an amusing and poignant look back at the last great days of repertory cinema, when, before the advent of videos and DVDs, film-lovers supported independent (and often eccentric) cinemas where double bills of Kurosawa, Godard, Tarkovsky Sirk and Hawks constituted a mere week's viewing ... (sniff) don't get us started ...

THE ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS' GUIDE TO HOW TO WRITE A SCREENPLAY
Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th February - 10.30am to 4.30pm

You've always dreamed of writing a screenplay.  Now's the time to do it.  In this intensely hands-on course, working with other writers, you'll learn the fundamentals as well as the jargon.  You'll leave with the beat outline of your first screenplay.

Also suitable for writers who are feeling rusty;  or those who've read the books but can't quite seem to get down to writing the script.

SCREENLAB: EXCITING TREATMENTS
Saturday 25th February 10.30am to 5.30pm

Planning, editing or selling a script? You need a treatment.

And not just any treatment - you need a treatment that inspires you to write your best, a treatment that clarifies the story beats, one that draws you and your readers into the story and holds them there till the end.

In this practical and inspiring workshop we’ll set you up to write strong and involving treatments for cinema, TV single and series proposals, using professional analysis and stimulating exercises.

THE COMEDY WRITING WEEKEND
Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th March - 10.30am to 4.30pm

A practical, exercise-focussed course covering many aspects of comedy writing. Starting with the building blocks of joke-writing, we'll move to sketch-writing, comedy monologues, topical gags before working on sit-com structure.

You'll learn the basic skills to make your material funny in any format or medium you're writing for including film, tv, radio, theatre, stand-up or print.

You'll work with other writers in this intensively hands-on weekend.

HERSTORY
Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th March - 10.30am to 4.30pm

HERSTORY is a script development workshop designed for women writers.  If you are in the middle of a screenplay and feel stuck, or if you'd like to use this weekend to begin a brand new story, experimenting with ideas which have been floating around in your head for a while, come along and join a network of women writers supporting each other.

Please note:  this course is for women writers, not about female characters so feel free to bring along your scripts and/or ideas featuring an all-male cast.

THE ONLY WAY TO LEARN HOW TO WRITE . . .

. . . is by writing.  Our dynamic courses are based on exercises, not lectures. They're designed to help you develop your skills, improve your technique, and hone your craft.

We run intensive script development workshops that mentor you through every stage of the scriptwriting process from conception to final draft.

You can train in day, weekend and evening workshops, send your scripts for personal assessment and meet our consultants one-to-one or by email.

Writers come to our courses from Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. They range from total beginners to experienced screenwriters, published novelists and playwrights.

We've expanded into areas like radio writing, teaching script reading and editing, corporate courses, and schools and higher education.

We're passionate about good writing.  We are all writers too.  And because we never stop learning ourselves, we commit to helping support the success of our writers as they get better and better.
