WRITING NEO NOIR
Neo Noir is uniquely suited to revealing the modern world's malaises.
Updating the themes of classic Film Noir, its stories show us the dangerous, self-damaging aspects of human nature and the flaws in our institutions and workplaces.
For these reasons, the genre is a useful vehicle for both social commentary and psychological insight.
For instance, Chinatown (above) had powerful political, economic and ecological themes; its exposé of patriarchal power could be said to prefigure the #MeToo movement.
This seminar unpacks the genre to find the ideas that make it tick, and shows how these can be applied to make strong, contemporary stories.
Here's a BLOG PIECE outlining why Neo Noir is so pertinent to the times we live in.
We'll watch entertaining and inspiring clips which illustrate each important element of the genre.
Explanation and discussion will enable you to understand these topics in detail.
We'll look at how the genre addresses sexuality, gender, and other political, social and psychological themes.
Fun and interesting exercises will help you to create the elements of your own Neo Noir story.
NEO NOIR FACEBOOK GROUP
You'll be meeting some like-minded people on the workshop, and it seems artificial to limit the interactions to a single day.
So we'll be creating a special Facebook group for attendees where we can share links, documents and images before and afterwards - and maybe find people to collaborate with on projects.
