Bursaries Available for Writers

Although we are able to offer very high value services at prices which we keep as low as possible, we appreciate that some participants may still need financial assistance with the costs.

We offer concessionary prices to members of a number of organisations. Check each individual workshop for the concessions which apply.

There are many bursary opportunities available for writers and filmmakers if you know where to look. Indeed financial support for training in the arts can often be found in some quite surprising places. Here are the sources we've heard about so far, but you may find others - if so please pass the word on so we can add tthem to the list.

Note some schemes have strict deadlines and we advise you to make your approaches to them in good time.

Business and Digital Media Training Initiative and The Women in Digital Entertainment

Business and Digital Media Training Initiative (BDMTI) and The Women in Digital Entertainment (WiDE) are joint funded by the European Social Fund and the University College for the Creative Arts and are designed to support people in the digital media industry and those wishing to enter the industry.

Beneficiaries of the projects are able to access up to £150 from an external training fund. This could cover one or more Euroscript workshops or other services. For further information go to www.wide.ucreative.ac.uk  and www.bdmti.ucreative.ac.uk or email wide@ucreative.ac.uk or bdmti@ucreative.ac.uk

Local authority support

All local authorities have provision to assist adults in their area who need further training. In some cases, they may even have specific funds to help with media training. Each local authority works differently, but is definitely worth approaching and we have had some signal successes with, for example, writers gaining funding from their local authority to book a year's worth of courses.

The London Development Agency

The LDA has schemes to help specific groups in developing their skills.

Local development agencies

You may also find similar assistance from your own local media development agency (although Londoners may have less luck unless they live or work in East London). If you don't know your agency check the BFI regions page.

Arts Council

The Arts Council also supports individual artists with small bursaries for professional development and training opportunities in the arts and arts management, organised by region. Check which region applies to you here.

Skillset

A number of different schemes for supporting people who need training in the industry can be found through Skillset. The website and the choices can be bewildering, but Skillset also offer to help guide you through what you need if you contact them here.

UK Film Council

Training and script assessment costs for individuals and production companies can be included in applications to the UK Film Council for script development support.  Details.

Thank you to those of you who have written in with information on financial help for training. If you hear of any new bursary opportunities, please tell us and we'll post the information on this page.
