Women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition
Marilyn Monroe

Writing Female Characters

Wednesday 18 January  (repeated on Wednesday 20 June)
6:30pm - 9:30pm
Tutor: Gabriella Apicella

Marilyn Monroe, Margaret Thatcher and Aung San Suu Kyi have all had important feature films made about them in recent months, yet the portrayals of women in mainstream film remain depressingly stereotypical.

No two women are the same...

Sexualised, victimised, demonised and undermined, even the most iconic female characters are at risk of being made bland and unthreatening when they appear in film scripts.  When asked to name strong female characters, it is a sad statement on the lack of interesting roles for women when Thelma and Louise are still being cited, 21 years after the film was released.

In response to regular queries about how to write female characters, this course has been developed to help participants write strong and believable women who drive the action and provide alternative versions of femininity and womanhood.

Changing perceptions

This workshop will include practical exercises and workshopping of participants' current projects and ideas.
