Creating Compelling Characters

Saturday 31st July
10.30am to 5.30pm
Tutor: Charles Harris

Characters are at the very heart of the screenwriting process. Stories are nothing without great characters to care about, love, hate and remember.

This workshop will help you analyse the strengths and weaknesses of your characters and give guidance on how to make characters fresh and believable, living vividly in the minds of the audience.

With film clips to inspire you, practical workshopping, group and individual exercises and personal feedback.

Numbers are strictly limited to ensure maximum opportunity for individual discussion and feedback of your project

The day

Create a cast of characters that will provide energy and emotional drive for your movie or TV drama.

In the first half of the day you will look at ways of bringing freshness, strength and credibility to your characters. You'll focus first on the protagonist. This is one crucial area which too often causes problems for an otherwise promising script. You will practise the methods of the greatest screenwriters to help you develop your own individual style and enrich your central character, to bring life and energy to your story and attract the best actors.

After lunch we'll widen our focus to discuss the other roles that surround your main character. You'll learn about the many archetypes (far more than the simple "hero's journey!") Finally, we'll look in detail at the importance of creating a "character constellation" in which each character of your story impacts strongly on the others.

You will leave with a detailed understanding of how to create and adapt a full cast of characters for your scripts with energy and originality.

Includes
  • The six key characters
  • Mercutio characters and 'Mentor Antagonists'
  • Developing strong central characters
  • Creating powerful character constellations
  • Widening the range of archetypes
  • Characters for long-running series
