The Absolute Beginner's Guide To How To Write A Screenplay

Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th June
10.30 - 4.30pm
Tutor:  Fenella Greenfield

'Succinct, gold nugget of a course.’

'A useful guide to kickstart your screenplay after those many, many years of procrastination!'

'Even if you don't have a film idea, come along and be inspired.  You'll be surprised!

'If there's always been something rattling at the back of your head, this is worth trying'.

'An informative, enjoyable and encouraging session, which gives you the practical starting point and introduction to tools you need to progress.'Spend two days learning the fundamentals.

If your ambition is to write a film script, or you need a refresher course because you're stuck, then this intensive, hands-on workshop will give you the tools you need.

By the end of the weekend you will have the beat outline of your first feature script, stepped out structurally from beginning to end, and you'll have the expertise you need to begin writing the screenplay.

The course is designed for a wide range of people:

those who write for other media but have never written a screenplay;

those who've never written anything before;

those who work in other areas of the film business and would like to understand how screenplay writers spend their day;

or those who've read the books, been on the courses and are still stuck on page 45.

Don't dream it, do it
  • The screenplay: what does it look like? How is it formatted? Watch the beginning of a well-known movie while reading its screenplay
  • The idea: how to generate many - then select the best
  • Writing cinematically: how to think epic and tell stories using images
  • Dialogue: how to write spoken words like poetry
  • Plot: how to think up great twists
  • Further reading: now I've completed my first film script, what next?
For absolute beginners only

Screenplay writing is like no other:  it's probably most akin to writing poetry while you've got to think like a photographer.  This course is designed for people who write for other media;  who've never written anything before;  or who work in the film business and would like to understand how the film script is written.

Intensively hands-on you will be writing and brainstorming all weekend.  By the end of the workshop you will have written your first complete one-minute script.

We don't give you lectures, we get you writing.  So come with pencil and paper.
